Jefferson County is sandwiched between four larger counties. We are surrounded by
Shawnee, Leavenworth, Douglas and Atchison counties. The county consists of eight
third class cities, 12 townships and is the home of Perry Lake.
Perry Lake was built by the Corp of Engineers as a reservoir covering 12,000 acres
with dedication ceremonies in August 1970. The lake is the third largest in the
State of Kansas.
The current census for Jefferson County, KS is 18,243 people. The original courthouse
was built in 1867 and was the oldest courthouse in the state until it was destroyed
by a tornado in 1960. The current courthouse was occupied in 1962.
John Stuart Curry, renown artist, was a native of Winchester, KS in Jefferson County
and was buried there. Some of his breathtaking murals decorate the Kansas State
Capitol in Topeka.
The Board of Commissioners conduct the county business every Monday. Their elected
offices are held in four-year terms.
